[Jaydn:]
"Not getting eaten sounds like a good one to me!" I called, flinching as the thing almost ate Azen. That would have been very, very, very bad. . .especially since there was nothing I could do against it and it would probably eat me. "Why is it out here? Is it supposed to guard the island or something?" I wondered [briefly] if Azen had ever encountered this thing before. From his reaction, I assumed he hadn't; I mean, he said he didn't know about the bridge, so it's likely he didn't know about the monster, either.

"I'm not sure. If it is gaurding the island, I think we would have seen it when we first came over." I yelled back as the thing hissed again. From the huge convenience this bridge was supposed to be, it' really brought nothing but trouble up until now.
I thought back to serpent legends I had heard from both my mothers. The story of a Basilisk gave me an idea. "Maybe if we can take out its eyes, it might leave us alone." I called over. AT least that would give us some advantage, if it couldn't see us. Problem was, we had no way to do that. "You wouldn't happen to have a sword handy would you?"

"You wouldn't happen to have a sword handy, would you?"
"Yeah, I totally have a sword. I walk around expecting giant mutants snake-like things to attack me all the time, so I keep one with me. WHY THE H**L WOULD I HAVE A SWORD?" I threw my hands up into the air, forgetting for a moment that there was a huge sea monster trying to eat us. "I say we just run towards the island and hope it doesn't catch us." I really didn't want to get near that thing's head. . .sharp, pointy teeth did that to you.

My eyes widened at Jaydn's outburst. Wow, if he was this exuberent in battles, I had half a mind to send him to Anjay's people. Nevertheless, he had a good plan. We just had to be careful about timing.
THe snake lunged again, this time behind Jaydn, and I took off for the sand, and I could only hope that Jaydn had enough sense to dodge it and run too. I didn't let up until my feet hit the sand, and I fell to my knees gasping. Maybe running that hard after a night with hardly any sleep wasn't a good idea.

As the snake lunged at me I lurched forward, regretting calling attention to myself. I ran after Azen, praying the snake wouldn't try and eat me again. I was about thirty feet from the shore when it went underwater - sending a wave over me in the process. I fell forward as the wave washed over me, slamming into the wood. I'd probably end up with a splinter in my forehead or something just as ridiculous.
I sat up slowly, coughing up the water I had swallowed. I staggered to my feet and looked around. The monster was gone, but just because I couldn't see it didn't mean I wanted to stand around on the bridge all day. I walked to the beach and collapsed next to Azen. "I'm all wet. . ."

I couldn't help it, I laughed. I stood up. I could tell there were a bunch of islanders around me, but I tended to JAydn first. Still, I couldn't keep thesmile off my face and the exuberence out of my voice as I registered the fact that I was now truly home. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He looked like he hit his head pretty hard, but there wasn't much externsl damage from what I could see.

"Are you okay?"
I straightened my arms, making sure I hadn't broken or sprained anything when I fell. "Other than being wet, I think I'm fine." I looked up; there were a ton of people around us. "Who are all these people?"

My smile grew, and gestured towards the crowd. "These are the islanders of this place." I looked over my shoulder, now addressing our welcoming party. "Everyone, this is Jaydn. Don't worry, he's no threat to you, and actually I owe him a lot." THat was all I could before we were bombarded.
I was asked so many questions about where I had been, what that monster was, and even about Jaydn that I couldn't even discern who was who. I seemed to have gotten the bulk of the onlookers, but I noticed a few of the younger ones, probably about Sevren's age and below, were brave enough to talk to Jaydn. I had no idea how he would react, and I kept my eyes trained on them, ready to pull them away if he showed any discomfort.

I nodded, looking around at everyone. I hadn't expected so many people. . .hadn't Azen said there wasn't many? Good golly, it looked like there were about forty people here; I'd hate to find out what Azen's definition of 'a lot' was.
I jumped when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around; it was a group of kids. "Uh, hi." I didn't know what they wanted; why were they talking to me? I was a complete stranger. . . Didn't their parents teach them not to talk to strangers? A little girl (my guess would be she was about four or five) stepped forward and hugged me.
"You broughted Azen back!" I blinked. Okay, the kid hugged me. What was I supposed to do? I patted her shoulder and she backed up, beaming at me.
"Uh, you're welcome."

I laughed at Jaydn's reaction as a young serpent girl threw her arms around him. He seemed awkward, but nothing to be too concerned about.
I stumbled a bit as about three more kids jumped on my back while their parents and the other adults kept barraging me with questions. I knew people would be worried and all, but it was only a few days that I was gone. I hadn't expected the entire island to come running to the beach. "Alright, alright, HEY!" I held up my hands for silence, and as always, it made me feel a little odd when everyone listened. "Look, I'll explain everything at the Central Dias, everybody just meet there, I don't think the beach will hold all of us." I detached a few kids from me as everyone started filing out.
I turned to Jaydn, laughing breathlessly. "Sorry about that. I guess our arrival was a little unexpected."

"Sorry about that. I guess our arrival was a little unexpected."
I nodded. The girl had run off when Azen told everybody to go to the Central Dias, and the other kids that had come up to me with her had gone, too. "Yeah, just a little." I stood up and looked around. I have to admit, for a place surrounded by water, it was pretty neat. There was still a lot of sand, but it was different that it was in the desert . . . softer, almost.
"Is everyone here a serpant?" It was probably a stupid question, but I was curious. Not everyone seemed like they were, though I couldn't really imagine different species living together peacefully.

I started walking along one of the paths that I knew led to the back part of the Dias. It was probably a useless precaution; it was most likely surrounded by now. I was almost surprised by Jaydn question. But, he did come from a place of just serpents, so I guess he would naturally be curious. "No...in fact, in comparison, there's actually very few of them here. Not many mammals either. Most of the people here either have wings or a gifted ability to swim, seeing how those are the primary ways of getting to an island like this."
My own words issued a pang of sadness in me. I had promised Jaydn that if he didn't like it here I would be sure to get him back home. But with that monster out there, it might be a while before anyone would try going overseas for a while. I wanted to tell him this, but I didn't want him to have another bad thing to get used to if he was going to get used to this place.

[Jaydn:]
Wow; okay, so different species could live in close quarters without killing each other. "I've never been anywhere where more than one species has lived together without feuding. How do they all get along? I mean, isn't it hard when they're all so different from one another?" Even to me this sounded stupid; all the islanders have probably been living together since they were born; they probably didn't really notice the difference.

Luckily I'd had some experience with this, since Jaydn wasn't the first one to ask these questions. "At first it was, it took a lot of work. But, Hali and I regulated things, and eventually most of the feuds smoothed up. Sometimes we get a troublemaker or two, usually falcon, who tries to stir things up again, but we usually make them leave before anything really starts. Nowadays Hali and I still police around, stepping in when an argument gets more than verbal, but thankfully, things like that are happening less and less." Those first years were really hard on all of us, especially Hali and me, who usually ended more banged up than the people who were fighting, simply by trying to stop it. But I guess hard work pays off in the end.

[Jaydn:]
"Oh. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. A lot of the kids probably don't know the difference between living with only their species and with others, do they?" I assumed that there weren't any falcons living on the island, since, according to Azen, all they wanted to do was stir up trouble here.
He'd mentioned Hali before, though I still had no idea who she was. I wanted to ask, but we were almost to the Central Dias now; I'd ask later.
